EMHS Weekly Rundown | September 7-11
Good morning Griffin community,
It was awesome to see so many students at the barbecue last Friday, a wonderful way to kick off the new school year. We hope everyone is enjoying the last long weekend of summer. A gentle reminder to students that schedules will be finalized on September 10, after which there will be no more Semester 1 course changes. Students may access their advisor (alphabetically by last name) for other purposes starting this week.
Updates to school entry procedures
All entry doors to the school will be open until 8:48 (start time of classes). At 8:49 the 69th Street and parkade entrance doors will be locked. Students arriving after this time can enter through the main entrance door off of Springborough Boulevard, which will remain open until 9:45. The main door will be also be open at lunch and after school. Entrance to the school after 9:45 will require a buzz-in at the main entrance. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation as we enhance building security for students and staff.
EMHS School Council Corner
School Council is a wonderful way for new parents/ guardians to get involved in the life of the school. Our first council meeting of the year will take place on Wednesday, September 16 at 6pm. This meeting will be both virtual and in-person. Please use this link to register to attend. In addition, the Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 14 at 6 pm.
2025/26 Yearbooks Are In!
2025-26 yearbooks are in and will be handed out in your student’s Period 3 class next week. Graduated students can pick up their yearbooks from Mrs. O’How in the main office starting Monday, September 14th. Current students who have a Period 3 spare or cannot get their yearbooks next week can pick them up from 2304 at a later date – more info to come!

Student Leadership Conference Opportunity
The 2026 Canadian Student Leadership Association Conference from Oct 6-11 in Toronto is an exciting opportunity that highlights the very best of student leadership in Canada - from inspiring keynote speakers to specialized workshops, peer-led sessions and community building, there is something for everyone at CSLC.
We are looking to select 4 students who encompass hard work, dedication and leadership qualities in the classroom and community.
Fee: approximately $2,500 including Hotels, Flights, Car Rental, Boat Tour and Aquarium CSLC Registration, Swag Items, Fuel for Rental Car, CSLA Breakfast.
Heritage grant funding and fundraising will reduce costs per participant.
Students apply by submitting a 250-word written response explaining why you feel you would be a good fit for this trip and why you would like to participate, to Ms. Perry by Friday September 11 @ 5:00pm.
Conference itinerary will be shared at the online parent meeting on Monday, September 14 @5 pm.
Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre School Trip
November 30 – December 4, 2026
There are still a few spots available for Grade 11 and 12 students interested in an unforgettable, hands-on marine biology experience on the west coast of Vancouver Island!
Students will have the opportunity to explore the marine environment, participate in real-world field studies, and experience marine science outside the classroom at the renowned Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre.
Cost: $2,150 per student

European History AP Course
Are you interested in challenging yourself, strengthening your academic skills, and getting a head start on your post-secondary journey?
Students currently enrolled in Social Studies 20-1 for the 26-27 school year can register in AP European History, a full-year course that runs in conjunction with Social Studies 20-1. Through this course, students will complete all of the Alberta Social Studies 20-1 curriculum while also exploring the fascinating history of Europe from 1450 to the present. Students will develop a deeper understanding of major historical events, revolutions, and ideas that continue to shape our world today.
AP European History is an excellent opportunity for students to develop the skills that are highly valued in university and beyond, including:
Critical thinking and analysis – learning to evaluate complex ideas and evidence
Strong writing skills – developing clear, persuasive, and evidence-based arguments
Communication and discussion – confidently sharing and defending ideas
Students who successfully complete the course will receive 8 Alberta High School credits. In addition, students who achieve a score of 4 or 5 out of 5 on the AP European History Exam in May 2027 may be eligible to receive advanced university credit equivalent to a one-semester university history course, depending on the Post-Secondary institution.

Off-Campus Corner
High School students earn credits towards graduation through a variety of pathways: apprenticeships, dual-credit with post-secondary institutions, through work experience, hands-on learning with trades unions, and through paid internships. All of these opportunities are explained here.
