EMHS Weekly Rundown | September 21-25 


Good morning Griffin families! 

This week marks the first opportunity to come together as a community as we host our High School Orientation or Meet the Teacher night this Thursday, September 24. We welcome all parents and caregivers to tour the school, meet your child’s teachers, and find out key information that will help when communicating about your child’s education. Doors open at 5 pm to give you a chance to check out our Student-Led Clubs Fair.  

Evening Schedule 

5:00- 6pm – Clubs Fair on Main Street 

6:00-6:30 – Key message in main gym 

6:30- 8:00 – follow your child’s timetable and meet each teacher 

8:15 pm – presentation on Advanced Placement (AP) courses (theatre) 

In addition, two of our Parent Associations will meet as follows:  

5:00- 6 pm – Ernest Manning Music Parent Association  

8:00- 8:30 pm – Manning Robotics Parent Association (library upstairs)

High School Course Mark Overall Grade Calculation   

Throughout each high school course, students and families will continue to receive information about assignments, assessments, and teacher feedback. This information helps students understand how they are doing, recognize their progress, and know what they can do next to improve.  

Overall Course Grades will be shared five weeks into each semester (October 5 for Semester 1 and March 8 for Semester 2) By this time, teachers have gathered enough evidence of learning to provide an accurate picture of a student’s learning and achievement. Earlier in the semester, a small number of assignments can have a large impact on a student’s overall grade and may not yet reflect their learning accurately.  

Waiting to share an Overall Course Grade helps students focus on learning and feedback rather than changes in a number. Our goal is for students to understand their progress, celebrate their growth, and know their next steps. Keeping the focus on learning and growth supports both student achievement and well-being.  

 

Construction Update – Parkade Access 

Construction of our new portables is underway, and from time to time there may be some disruption to traffic along the boulevard leading to the parkade. We ask that students, families, and visitors please follow the directions provided by the construction company and use caution when travelling through the area. 

Tuesday, September 22: Concrete will be poured between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., which may impact traffic flow. Access to the parkade will remain available, but traffic may be temporarily rerouted to accommodate the construction work.

Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival Mooncake Sale

Did you know? This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival is Friday, September 25! It’s one of the biggest traditional festivals in Chinese culture—a time for family, the full moon, and MOONCAKES! 🥮 

Grab a mooncake and celebrate with us! 🎉

Students from our Chinese classes and the Multicultural Leadership Club will be holding a mooncake sale during lunch on September 23 and 24. The money raised will support our school competition teams. Please find out more and pre-order here. 

 

Language Course Challenge

Do you speak a language other than English? You may be able to challenge a  30-level language course and earn 15 high school credits!

Demographic Verification Forms 

Please remember to log into your MyCBE account and access SchoolEngage to complete the annual Demographic Verification form for each student in your family. 

Alberta Education requires all families to review and submit this form every September to ensure our emergency contacts, medical information, and student details are completely up to date. While you are in SchoolEngage, please also take a moment to complete the Annual Authorization form (for media consent and district activity permissions) and any necessary Student Health Plans.

October 21st from 6-8pm. Doors will open at 6pm. 

All Grade-level students and families are welcome! 

Universities, Colleges, Technological institutions from across Canada (excluding Alberta) will be in attendance. 

 

EMHS School Council Corner 

The Annual General Meeting of School Council will be held on Wednesday, October 14 at 6 pm.  Register here  to attend virtually or in-person. Those attending online will be sent a  link shortly before the meeting.

Clubs Fair Wednesday September 23 and Thursday September 24 

Clubs are a wonderful way to get involved in the life of the school, and for students to find peers with similar interests. This year’s much anticipated Clubs Fair will be happening for students on Main Street Wednesday Sept 23 at lunch, Thursday, Sept 24 at lunch, and Thursday from 5:00 to 6 for High School Orientation. Students who wish to start a club, or continue a previous one, are asked to fill out the QR code on the television screens throughout the school to start the process.  

 

November Diploma Exam Sign Up 

For those students who wish to write a November diploma exam for a course they have previously completed, sign up is available through the QR code displayed on the television screens throughout the school. Students fill out the form and attend an information meeting with Ms. Waringer on Tuesday, September 29 at lunch in the Learning Commons, at which time they will be officially registered to write the exam, and given the date, time and location.   

 

Off Campus Corner 

High School students earn credits towards graduation through a variety of Unique Pathways: apprenticeships, exploratory trade programs, dual-credit opportunities with post-secondary institutions, work experience. All of these opportunities are explained here.

RBC Next Step Scholarships - RBC Royal Bank 

 

The RBC Ignite Scholarship will award 500 scholarships annually valued up to $1,500 each to help youth access new skills and training. Hands-on training (vocational or trade programs), skills-building courses and job-ready certifications. 

 

Loran Scholarships  

 

 Up to 36 Loran Awards are available to students entering university in the fall of 2027 who distinguish themselves through their strength of character, commitment to service, and intrinsic sense of values-driven leadership. Loran Awards consist of:  

  •  An annual stipend of $12,000 
  • A full tuition waiver annually, tenable at one of Loran’s partner universities. 
  • Up to $14,000 for the summer experiential learning program
