Ernest Manning Weekly Rundown

Sep 8 - Sep 12

Greetings Griffin Families!

There has been a lot of start-up hustle and bustle happening in the building by staff and students, and the energy is hinting at a great new school year!

With the start-up comes questions from families, and we encourage you to keep sending them our way.  To help direct your inquiries to the best person or department, we have created an EMHS Communication Cheat Sheet as your quick guide for support. We encourage you to download a copy for yourself for ease of access.

As a complement to all of the detailed information on our website, below are some highlights of upcoming activities at EMHS.

EMTV Weekly Rundown

Our EM Daily by-student for-student broadcasts start their 10th anniversary season this year.

Look forward to new episodes of the EMTV Weekly Rundown (summary of the week’s episodes) beginning the week of September 22, where students present all the latest from Ernest Manning.

Parent Council Connections

Parent Council plays an important role in supporting student success, providing funding and logistical support to various school-based initiatives, as well as valuable feedback in strategic direction.  All parent(s)/guardian(s) are invited to attend the first School Council meeting of 2025/26 on Wednesday, September 17th, 2025, at @6pm.  Please use this link to register. Please contact the main office if you have any questions regarding Parent Council.

Parent Lending Library

Thanks to the generosity of our Parent Council, we are pleased to be able to offer a new lending library of books of interest to high school parents. Next time you are in the office, feel free to browse our selection of titles and borrow one that interests you.

Parking Passes

While we still have passes remaining,  those interested in parking at school are encouraged to use this link for more information and for the link to the online application https://ernestmanning.cbe.ab.ca/parking

For those who have already submitted the application, please pay for and pick up your Pass ASAP from the business office during regular school hours.,

The Calgary Parking Authority will be starting to patrol the lot starting the week of September 8, so students are discouraged from parking without a pass.

Please contact Alana Adams @ agadams@cbe.ab.ca if you have any questions.

 Students with a Half-Day Schedule

From time to time, students nearing graduation will have a half-day schedule for a variety of reasons. Due to the bustling hallways this year (we have over 2,000 students attending classes), students with half-day schedules are reminded to be at home until their classes start and then go home once they end.

Bike/ Scooter Lock Up

Unfortunately, Ernest Manning is not immune to bike and scooter thefts. Though we are able to capture video surveillance of the theft to aid in recovery, the best way to deter thieves is to secure your bike with a U-lock. For more information, consult this article from Bike Calgary. Love your bike? Lock it right!

Lifetouch Photos

This is a reminder that Lifetouch will be taking student photos from 9 am to 3 pm on a drop-in basis as follows:

Tuesday, October 28, 2025 | Photo Re-take day

Locker Distribution

Grade 11 and 12 students will retain their lockers and locks from last year. If you have a locker, but forget your combination, please see Ms. O’How in the main office.  Any students wishing to have a locker will have the opportunity after school in the cafeteria as follows:

Grade 10: Last names A-M:  Monday, September 8 @ 3:45 pm

Grade 10: Last Names N-Z: Tuesday, September 9 @ 3:45 pm

EMPower Store

Another great initiative at Ernest Manning is the EMPower Store, run, staffed and organized by our Business teachers and students. The EMPower Store will open on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.  Students can access key instructional materials (Key books, calculators) as well as EMHS swag items and favourite snacks and beverages.

EMMPA AGM Notice of Date Change

The Annual General Meeting of EMMPA will be held on Monday, September 22, at 7:00 pm in the band room Room 1415). At this meeting, the Board of Directors will provide a report about the 2025-2026 school year, information about our upcoming year, and elect a new Board of Directors. This is a mandatory meeting for all the parents of students in the Ernest Manning Music Program. For any inquiries about the Music Parents’ Association, please contact Viviana Pacheco at emmpaassistant@gmail.com

EMHS Clubs Fair

There are many ways to make friends and explore interests at Ernest Manning and joining one of our 30 clubs is an example. We are looking forward to hosting our annual Clubs Fair Wednesday, September 24 and Thursday September 25 at noon on Main Street as well as during the High School Orientation on Thursday evening. This is an opportunity for students to promote and join clubs they are interested in.

To propose a new club, students begin by meeting with AP Ms. Waringer to discuss the club proposal.

November Diploma Exam Writing

We will once again be running Diploma Exams this November in cooperation with Western Canada High School. Exams will be offered in the following way:

Manning: Social, Chemistry, Physics, Science

Western: ELA, Math, Biology

Students who have completed Diploma courses but have not written their Diploma exam for the course, can use this form to indicate their interest in writing an exam in November. Students CANNOT write a diploma exam until they have completed the course.
